College claims another 3D 'first'
The BAE Systems Insyte Training College has successfully delivered the UK's first Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) approved aerodrome course, using its new, cutting edge 3D Tower simulator. The College was the first facility in the UK to install and operate the 3D Air Traffic Control simulator. The CAA endorsement is further testimony to the College’s efforts to deliver significant benefits to its students.
The Simulator gives students a more realistic Aerodrome Visual and Instrument Control training environment, allowing for a smoother transition to an operational environment. The 240° out-of-window view fully recreates an air traffic environment featuring Surface Movement Radar & ATM and can be increased to a full 360° field of view when required. The simulator has a built-in communications system which is representative of an operational system. Students can simultaneously ‘control’ up to 500 objects (aircraft & ground vehicles) and any airspace, airport, aircraft or vehicle can be created - including fictitious ones. The system also provides full weather environment control, including precipitation & reduced visibility; day & night operations; airfield lighting, aircraft landing & navigation lights and fire & smoke effects.
Students from the UK's regional airports including Humberside and Coventry have already completed the training and will now embark on the first stage of their ATC careers at their respective units. Steve Ward, Insyte College Principal, said: “Students will benefit from a quicker transition to the operational environment because it allows for more ‘true to life’ air traffic situations.”
The 3D Aerodrome Course is a welcome addition to Insyte’s broad and diverse customer solutions portfolio.
